US Racing to Develop Hypersonic Weapon Systems with $5 Billion R&D

A Defense Update. The US Defence Department is increasing investments and accelerating testing to develop hypersonic weapons years earlier than it previously planned, Defence Secretary Mark Esper said. "The Department nearly doubled its long-term investment - almost 5 billion more in [fiscal year] 2020 - for hypersonic Technologies alone over the next five years. Our 2021 budget will be even stronger" The Pentagon's Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has signed a contract worth $13 million to develop hypersonic weapons interceptors for American air defences with top military aerospace and defence technology company, Northrop Grumman.
